Christmas Is just right around the corner and that means Scrappy winter steelhead fishing on the coast of WA… but before we go there let’s take a look at the other systems in WA state.
Columbia river: fishing is very slow on the Big C how ever there is a sturgeon retention above Bonnevile in January. That sounds way to cold for me but you can fish with one of Zilla Baits ambassadors James Reagan. He really knows this fishery.
Lewis River: the reports are slow with water levels above average but you can expect to have these rivers drop like a rock with the cold dry weather.
Kalama River: water levels are good with a occasional winter steelhead being caught in the lower section. Remember that with this cold weather the fish will be lethargic until the sun comes up.
Cowlitz River: very slow fishing as we all know that we use to depend upon this fishery until Tacoma Power killed the Christmas steelhead run…shame on them.

Chehalis River: flows are normal and will continue to drop but the water temp is the key. There are a few Christmas Coho and Scrappy winter Steelhead to be caught.
Humptulips River: flows are below normal and yes there are some descent number of steelhead in this system. Focus up by the Hatchery as they tend to congregate there. Eggs cured in www.zillabait.com is the ticket. You can also use beads under a float.
Wynoochee River: We had several good days on this system before the bottom dropped out and the water levels plummeted. With rain coming back in next week we will see descent numbers of Scrappy steelies. Side drifting was the ticket for us! My take on this year for the Nooch is it will be a slower year as the return off the plant was only in the 80,000 range.
Satsop River: the flows were below normal with only a occasional steelies being caught. But you can sure bet that will change this next week with the moisture moving in.
