Sometimes you just want to get out and snag some Springers yourself. Here’s Swanny’s Top Four placed to fish Upper Columbia Spring Chinook Fisheries.
Wind River: This is a troll fishery although there is some bank access. You must have Mag Wiggle Warts in Rocket Red, Dr. Death and Fire Tiger colors. Flat lined behind the boat 50-70 feet is permitted. There are usually too many boats to let out much more than 50 feet though. You can also flat line Mag lips 3.5-4.0. Swanny likes to use herring cured up with Zilla Bait Herring Cure, Red label and Green, trolled behind a small X2 Flasher of choice. You gotta use green and purple colors. Prawn spinners are also a favorite. Swanny also uses coon shrimp for this fishery cured up in Zilla Prawn/Shrimp cure. You can also get your coon shrimp from Columbia Basin Bates, cured up or in the raw. Blades to use are 2, 2.5 and 3. There are a lot of colors to choose from but Swanny’s favorites are Lamp Lighter, 50/50 Red and White, Rocket Red with blue dot and Lime Green with blue dot.
Drano: This is also a troll fishery with limited bank access. Drano is closed on Wednesdays for tribal netting. FYI, the best day to fish Drano is Thursday as the lake is stirred up and causes those Springers to really bite. The best method to use is flat line Mag Wiggle Warts in flo Orange, Dr. Death and Fire Tiger. Also, 3.5-4.0 Mag lips in colors like Double Trouble, purple and pink, and Grinch. Your best bet is to troll herring cured with Zilla Herring Cure behind a very small X2. Prawn spinners work great especially if their Coon shrimp cured in Zilla Prawn and Shrimp Cure. Bring a large assortment of blades and beads so your gear is different than the rest. Get your assortment at BC Angling Post in Gladstone, OR.
Dalles Dam: This is another fantastic troll fishery. Swanny uses small Red Label cured in Zilla with small X2 or sometimes no flasher. Trolling a Mag Wiggle Wart has started to become popular from the locals. You can also troll with a Lure Jensen K10-K12 wrapped with sardine on a dropper line.
John Day: If you like to anchor fish than this fishery is right down your alley. Bring lots of plugs from Lure Jensen and an assortment of colors, especially Grinch and Tequila Sunrise. Also Mag Lips. I like to anchor in 18-22 feet but ya better get there early and find a spot because it gets crowded. Scents are a must have. Sardine, Tuna, Krill but the best is Super Dipping Sauces in garlic.
