Rod set up is so crucial. You need to have moderate slow action rods, from 9ft-10’. lLne weight should be 12-25lb test. My choice is St Croix Rods
Reels should be a good quality line counter. I like the Okuma Coldwater , Size 30 line. I really prefer a braided line, Suffix 830. It has a gortex inner fiber which causes the line to be water proof and truest diameter line. I use 65lb test from my braided main line. I use a 50lb maxima shock leader that is 2ft to a flasher. There are so many flashers out there, I prefer a X2 Flasher. and the leader is 25-30 lb maxima , length 54”- 72
Baits are so important. Good quality herring from Chinook Bait. You can also get anchovies .
Some people like to use spinners which work at certain times as well from size 4-6. Colors will very but one of your most popular are Yakima Bait half red and white
Places to Launch on the Oregon side:
• John Day

Where to fish…According to the tides and water temp, on the incoming tide start low in the system from entrance of Chinook to the church on the WA side and work the bottom of the tide and as the tide moves in follow it up river. Depths to fish, Fish the bottom and if you are not getting bit move your baits up in the different water columns.
