Happy New Year to you all, hope this will be the best year yet to come.
Fringed temps have come to the NW and has caused not only the air temperatures to drop but the water temps as well.
Many say that the time to pull plugs for steelhead is now… I would have to disagree on that statement as we catch a ton of steelhead side drifting roe cured in Zilla Bait. The key is u just have to slow it down by adding more weight.
Columbia River: there is still a good sturgeon fishery above Bonnevile dam if you can stand the arctic Blast. As of right now the quota had not been filled on sturgeon so get in on the action will it is available.
Kalama River: water temps are cool but there are a few steelhead being caught down on the lower section. You can fish all types of ways, float and eggs/ jigs, drifting corkie and yarn, floats and beads. Visibility 3-4 ft.
Lewis River: Flows are at normal with 2-3 feet of visibility. Fishing has definitely slowed down on this fishery but I think it is because of the cold water temps.
Cowlitz River: the flows on this river system are very unstable and not sure why. However there is a few Steelhead and Coho around. Focus on the stretch from blue creek to Barrier dam.
Chehalis system: it’s definitely time to fish this system from the cold weather that has caused the water to drop as well as the water temps. My suggestion is to stay off the holes and cast far, it does not matter what technique you use just master it.
Humptulips River: there is a decent number of Scrappy Steelhead in this Sytsem. Focus up by the hatchery as you will find them stacked up there staging to go into the hatchery. Float and beads is very effective as well as float and jigs.
Wynoochee River: the word on the street is no water, I will agree with that as we experienced it. That is why I left that river as you can see 10 ft down if the hole is that deep. In order to catch any numbers of fish you had better stay far away and cast to the holes.
Satsop River: there was a small push of steelies that had came in earlier this week but with the cold temps the water plummeted and turned gin clear. I have said this many times about staying off the holes and creating a stealth approach when the water conditions get like this.
