If it’s April or May, you can still get your limit of Springers and fishing the Upper Cowlitz River is a great place to do that. Here’s Swanny’s top places to bonk some Springers on that river system.
- Barrier Dam. This is where the Salmon Hatchery is and the Springer’s stack up BIG TIME. Use Bobber and eggs. Egg’s and Shrimp known as the cocktail is very effective. Cured eggs in Zilla Bait Cure will put limits of Springers in your cooler. Keep in mind the laws a regulations for the Cowlitz River.
- Boulder Gardens. Moving on down river, you want to make sure the water height is good. You can catch plenty of Springers in the Boulders with bobbers and eggs. Also, a good way to get them to bite is artificial beads using Lured Beads in size 10-12mm.
- Baker Rock. This is a deep hole. Best techniques to use here are hover fishing and bobber fishing. If there are a bunch of boats in the hole, hover fishing is your best bet.
- Baker Rock to Blue Creek. Get to know this stretch and the current river flow. That’s the only way to know what spot to fish. Make sure you check the river levels before you leave. Keep in mind that Tacoma Power can and will raise or lower the water levels which can KILL THE BITE.
